As soon as it was revealed that Jon and his band of merry malcontents were legitimately going to follow Tyrion's frankly bonkers plan to go beyond the wall and kidnap a wight - as if it were the most natural, logical thing in the world - it was always very clear that sh*t was going to go DOWN in 'Beyond The Wall'.

There was no way we were having to endure that ridiculous writing and outright character stupidity without an almighty pay-off, and it came in the form of a emotional ballet of snow, violence and straight-up horror movie chills. There were ice bears, ice dragons, actual ice, a Hail Mary save by Dany, Arya the psychopath and lashings and lashings of good old fashioned Tormund charm.

It was all more than enough to make up for some convenient plotting, some trashy writing and yet more travel issues, and if Game Of Thrones success is judged purely on how much each episode makes you feel, it was a roaring one. The stakes were much, the pressure occasionally unbearable and the ramifications huge.
