Game Of Thrones Season 7 Finale: 7 Things You Might've Missed In 'The Dragon And The Wolf'

7. The Confusion Caused By Jon's Real Name

Game Of Thrones Jon Rhaegar Lyanna
HBO

You know nothing, Jon Snow. Not even your real name, apparently.

After last year's Tower of Joy scene, fans had deducted that Lyanna does tell Ned what Jon's real name is, we just don't get to hear it. The working theory was that it was Jaehaerys, which would've made some sense - Jaehaerys I was considered a great King, who always sought a peaceful solution - but instead he has been called Aegon.

This presents a couple of issues. The first is that Rhaegar already had a son called Aegon with Elia Martell, who was killed by the Mountain. That happened after Rhaegar died though, so it's not like he'd have chosen the name to replace the son he lost. Lyanna might conceivably have heard of Aegon's death, even while hiding in the Tower of Joy, or just thought it was a fitting name for a Targaryen.

Further complicating matters is that, in the books, there is a character presented as being Aegon, claiming he didn't actually die during the Sack of King's Landing. It remains to be seen how that plays out, but this could be the show's nod towards that storyline, since they've missed it out. Finally, Jon's name echoes what Maester Aemon told him:

"It takes a man to rule. An Aegon, not an Egg. Kill the boy and let the man be born."
