Game Of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 - Every Death In 'The Bells' Ranked Worst To Best

9. Harry Strickland (And The Golden Company)

Game Of Thrones Harry Strickland
HBO

Has there ever been anything more Game Of Thrones than the writers setting up the Golden Company as Dany's blue chip commodity in the final fight, protecting them from scrutiny to advance their mythology and then nerfing them about a minute after they step into battle?

You don't need time to think: there hasn't.

Harry Strickland was set up as the real deal and the Golden Company were Cersei's secret weapon, but sellswords have no fury like a khaleesi scorned and they were dispatched with almost comical ease. It just goes to show that money can't buy you everything and the supposed might of the Iron Bank wasn't worth the mercenaries it was written on.

Strickland was a non-entity, his men were pointless cannon fodder and they served no more than a narrative device to make Dany's fury more cool.
