Needless to say, this post contains major spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1, 'Winterfell'.

Game of Thrones is back. Winter is here, and the dead have arrived with it. The Night King and the army of the dead have made it through the Wall, which to put it mildly is rather concerning for anyone currently alive in Westeros, and the North in particular.

While the White Walkers don't appear in the Season 8 premiere, their presence is heavily felt. Towards the end of the episode, we find Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion making their way into Last Hearth, the seat of House Umber and the Northernmost major castle in Westeros (not including the Night's Watch), where they run into Night's Watch brothers led by Eddison Tollett.

There, they find the biggest casualty of the episode: poor little Ned Umber. The character pointedly left Winterfell for Last Hearth earlier in the episode, unfortunately signing his own death warrant in the process. He was killed by White Walkers and hung up to be found, with other body parts of victims arranged around him in those symbols we've seen since the White Walkers first appeared. He then turns into a wight, with Beric using his flaming sword to set him on fire.

Apart from Ned - which extinguishes yet another house from Westeros - the other casualties are some of Euron's crew, who are killed as Theon rescues Yara. Needless to say, however, there will be much bigger deaths to come this year.
