Game Of Thrones: Season 4 Death Watch (The Lion And The Rose)

Bastards, bickering and a hell of a surprise at the wedding reception.

Last week Tywin disowned Jaime, Arya regained Needle, the Hound became the defender of the innocent and we were introduced to the cannibal wilding Styr, Magnar of Thenn and the vengeful Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne. But that was all background fodder compared to the events this time week; with an episode climax that resulted in the collective cheers of a thousand fans. Before we got to that event, there was plenty more to enjoy. Outside of Kings Landing, 'The Lion And The Rose' featured the welcome return of many characters not seen since last year; stony Stannis Baratheon, loyal Davos Seaworth and fiery red priestess Melisandre on Dragonstone, Bran and his companions north of the Wall and up at the Dreadfort, and more shocking developments in the Theon/Reek and Ramsay Snow saga. It was also the episode of the season written by George R R Martin himself, so we knew there were good things to come. It was another Game Of Thrones wedding and after the horrific nuptials last season expectations were high. Needless to say the infamous 'Purple Wedding' was as almost dramatic as the 'Red'; a little less of the slit throats and stabbing to death of pregnant queens, but with a brutal and satisfying death none the less. Game Of Thrones season four's 'Death Watch' continues, as I look at the themes and highlights of 'The Lion And The Rose'. (You can catch the highlights of last week's 'Two Swords' here).
