Over the past several years, movies based upon comic books have been taking global box offices by storm. The Avengers remains the third highest-grossing film of all time, and both Iron Man and Batman make the top ten. It was therefore inevitable that the genre would make the jump from the silver screen to the small screen. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered in September 2013 as Marvel's first big prime time venture, but 2014 looks to be the year for DC. The first of the three new DC shows to premiere this fall was Gotham, and viewers everywhere finally got a glimpse of the Batman show that...wouldn't actually feature Batman and would instead focus on Jim Gordon's role in the police department. Where other DC Universe shows such as the CW's Arrow and NBC's upcoming Constantine might suffer from a lack of widespread awareness, Gotham has a built-in audience of fans still riding the high of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. The name alone is likely enough to guarantee decent ratings for the show as it goes through its early growing pains, and the high quality of certain elements of the first episode may well be enough to draw those who had been only mildly curious about the premise back for the next few weeks. Nevertheless, there were aspects that proved considerably less successful. So, here is a breakdown of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Gotham pilot.
