Monday March 5th 2012 sees the long awaited release of HBO’s Game Of Thrones onto DVD and Blu-Ray and, my, what a gorgeous and well-put together package it is.
For those who aren’t in the know or simply don’t have Sky Atlantic, Game Of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series A Song Of Fire and Ice and was arguably one of the best TV shows of 2011. The narrative centres on the powerful families of the Seven Kingdoms as they all vie for the Iron Throne. If you want swashbuckling fantasy drama for grown ups, with grand Shakespearean themes and as many Kings, Queens, Renegades and liars that you can shake a stick at, then Game Of Thrones is definitely something that deserves your gaze.
Should you be in need of further persuasion, HBO is also behind The Sopranos, The Wire, Band Of Brothers, True Blood, Entourage and Flight Of The Conchords. It’s simple. This is a network that doesn’t back losers. You just have to look at the cast list that includes the likes of Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage (who earned a Golden Globe and Emmy for his role as Tyrion Lannister), Iain Glen and Aiden Gillen to know that the Producers mean business.
At the launch event at London’s Old Vic tunnels, where the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros had been recreated, WhatCulture.com was not only lucky enough to try out the infamous throne for ourselves, but we also saw top British Director, and Director of an episode of GOT’s season 2, having a go in the hot-seat himself!
As for the box set, trust us, it’s comprehensive.
There are four exclusive Blu-ray only features, which all serve to immerse the viewer deeper and darker into the world of the story (as well as further hidden dragon eggs which uncover even more unseen content) then on both versions, the features include a Making Of, From The Book To The Screen, Character Profiles and 7 audio commentaries, including one with George R.R. Martin himself.
All in all, there’s enough here to keep even the most hardy aficionado’s thirst quenched until Season 2 hits our screens.
