Lost In Space Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

A glossy disappointment.

Netflix's long-awaited reboot of the classic 1960s sci-fi TV series Lost in Space is available to stream now, and critics are largely mixed-to-positive on it so far. It's been praised as a stylish update of the original show - jettisoning most of those pesky memories of the dodgy 1998 movie - while criticising some of its frustrating creative choices.

Sadly, the new Lost in Space doesn't even begin to meet all the lofty expectations, and while it's certainly not terrible overall, it is a deeply flawed piece of genre storytelling that never reaches the high-gear audiences will be hoping for.

As high-calorie, low-demand entertainment it's fine enough, and younger viewers in particular will probably enjoy it, but given the potential for this to be a smart, fun retooling of the long-dormant franchise, it ultimately feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.

There's certainly the possibility that a potential second season could build and improve upon this somewhat rough template, but as it stands, Lost in Space 2018 is off to a pretty shaky - if fitfully entertaining - start...
