This should almost go without saying, but the series needs to exist beyond Luke Cage if it wants to be any good. He’s the protagonist and certainly the bulk of the story should be focused on him, but his environment needs to feel lived in when he’s not around.

Daredevil worked not only because it’s fun to see him fight criminals, but because we were invested in Foggy fighting legal battles and Ben Urich digging into Fisk’s past. Likewise, we cared about Malcolm getting clean and Trish finding herself in Jessica Jones.

Luke Cage's main cast is decidedly small but there's still a lot of potential for some great character work. It's a good bet to count on the villains being memorable but the show must also turn comic book character Misty Knight into a compelling police detective.

There’s every reason to expect Luke Cage will be able to continue this trend. If all of the characters around him are engaging and well-developed, that’s a good sign the rest of the show will be too.
