Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best

10. Red Dwarf VIII

Red Dwarf
BBC

This was very much the "difficult" series of Red Dwarf. With an audience backlash to the perceived failures of series seven (which actually isn't all that bad, more of that later), series eight attempted to take the show back to its roots. And whilst bringing a live studio audience back into the equation was a good idea, the storylines were not.

The decision to resurrect the entire crew of Red Dwarf was the biggest failing of this series. Suddenly, the whole essence of the show - four losers left alone in space - became lost in a nonsensical, and unnecessary, story arc. Perhaps after so many series Doug Naylor became bored of the show's structure, and he wanted to freshen it up. But as he's now learned with more recent series, the structure was fine the way it was.

Most episodes of series eight became entirely forgettable, and are hardly worth revisiting. Worst too, the series would end on a bizarre cliffhanger which to date, has yet to be resolved.
