Red Dwarf X: 10 Reasons To Be Excited

Red Dwarf is poised to return to our screens this fall with six all new episodes!

In the industry there is a rule about genre mixing---especially as it applies to sitcoms---and that rule is that you don€™t blend genres in a sitcom. Everyone remembers the €œvery special€ episodes of their favorite series in which the series writers bent the rules and formulae used in creating a half hour of laughter by introducing drama. We€™d never admit we learned not to drink underage, do drugs or have premarital sex from those shows and we always made fun of them. All of which would seem to reinforce the idea that sit-coms don€™t mix genres. Rules, however, were made to be broken and in the 90s no show proved this more than Red Dwarf. Starting as a sci-fi/sit-com the show evolved into an action/sitcom with elements of sci-fi and graduated into a mélange of drama, comedy, action and sci-fi. In its initial run of six series, the boys from the Dwarf showed us that being the last human 3 million years into deep space with no hope of getting home is not only funny but can be a half hour of very entertaining television. Two more series gave fans more adventures---but didn€™t quite recapture the magic of the previous years. Still, the fan interest never waned and after the 8th series, the crew returned to the screen in 2009 with a three part special that broke the fourth wall---Back to Earth. Now, riding on the success of Back to Earth, Red Dwarf is poised to return to our screens this fall with six all new episodes. Penned by Red Dwarf co-creator, Doug Naylor, the show stands ready to grant the wishes of fans everywhere. The return of Red Dwarf is exciting to fans for a number of reasons---and a recently released teaser trailer has whet our appetites. Here, as we salivate for more, we€™ll look at ten of the best reasons to be excited about Red Dwarf Series X.
