Red Dwarf X Begins Tonight On Dave!

Red Dwarf makes its long awaited return to our telly screens tonight with the first episode of Series 10 €˜Trojan€™ airing at 9pm on Dave (and I€™m sure plenty of times thereafter). This is the second series of the show commissioned by the digital channel in their self-proclaimed quest of world/tv domination, and it looks set to impress on all levels. Following the exploits of Dave Lister (the last surviving human in the Universe), Arnold Rimmer (his former boss, brought back to life as a hologram), The Cat (evolved over millions of years from a house cat), Kryten (the €˜Condom-head€™ Android) and Holly (the senile ship's computer) as they search for a way back to Earth - Red Dwarf is, at its core, a claustrophobic inter-personal comedy with a backdrop of the bizarre. The genius with the show was not the scale of the monsters and special effects, but with the perfect blend of incompetence and stubbornness between the crew mates, and the escalating situations that occur as a result. Dwarf has had a difficult run since it first appeared on our screens back in 1988 on BBC2. In a media landscape very different than it is today, comedies were few and far between let alone ones set in space! The simple fact it was commissioned in the first place by the BBC surprised many, as did the fact that they never quite seemed to be proud of the show with it regularly sitting in the schedules shadows€ The truth is it was one of the jewels in the BBC€™s crown, running for 5 very successful series and being one of the most profitable shows for the commercial arm, before production was halted due to a particular cast members legal woes. It returned 4 years later with a slightly altered cast (Chris Barrie€™s untimely departure led to the introduction of Lister€™s dream girl Kochanski as a main character) and, whilst never really living up to the glory of earlier series, continued the fun in a typically Dwarf way. Series 8 was the last broadcast on the BBC, which left the show in limbo for 10 years. During this time rumours were abound of a Red Dwarf movie in production, which in fact got to the stage of rehearsals with the cast and crew before the plug was pulled due to the lack of investor interest. This is where Dave came in, bringing the show back in 2009 with a 3-part story €˜Back to Earth€™. Despite the plot seemingly copied from the recently released €˜League of Gentlemen€™ movie, it was great to see the cast reunite and see that the chemistry between the actors was definitely still there. So this bring us to Red Dwarf X, a full 6 episode series that promises to return to Dwarfs heyday, with all 4 main characters returning (unfortunately without Holly) to the ship. Recent promotional interviews with the Cast and Crew, have said that the best ideas from the planned movie have been incorporated into this series, as well as all the ideas they wanted to try before but were unable to. Also if interest is the final episode of the series titled €˜The Beginning€™ referring back to the first ever episode €˜The End€™, alluding to things going full circle and providing some sort of closure to the story. To celebrate the return of the series tonight, we take a look at some of the best one liners from each character in the series. There's only 5 each, and plenty more to choose from... so make sure you add your own favourites to the comments section!
