Robert Kirkman Changed How The Walking Dead Will End

It should have been over by now.

As part of Skybound's SDCC panel, The Walking Dead supremo Robert Kirkman fielded questions on his creation, offering a moment of honesty when one fan asked about how he would end the comic book.

To date, Kirkman has always said that all of his characters have a Sell By date and will die eventually, so we know not to expect a happy ending. Part of the series' grim appeal is in the unexpected way it builds up characters over a long time only to kill them off spectacularly, which might never have been the case for some of the more recent characters if Kirkman had got his own originally intended way.

He says he planned to end the series when the survivors got to one of their safe havens:

"The end has changed. There was one version that would have had it ending as soon as everybody reached Alexandria."

Quite stunningly, that's almost 100 issues ago and a lot has happened since.

During the Walking Dead show's SDCC panel, Andrew Lincoln also spoke about the end:

"I don’t know, man. I mean, the comic book’s still going, and Scott Gimple said that maybe there was an opportunity to finish the comic book and finish the TV series at the same time, which would be kind of cool. You should probably ask Robert Kirkman."

Does that mean the comic book might be wrapping up soon? The show surely can't keep going through all of the story it does without at some point facing the same hurdle as Game Of Thrones where they have to adapt beyond the end of the source material. But that doesn't sound like it's going to happen here.
