Sherlock: 6 Reasons It Needs To End (And 4 Reasons It Should Come Back)

Reasons It Should End...

6. Go Out On Its Own Terms

First of all, Sherlock's phenomenal success means that the production team find themselves in a very lucky position that few TV shows achieve: the decision of whether they continue is totally up to them. Most shows are at the whim of their respective networks (or streaming services) but the BBC have already commissioned a fifth season of Sherlock. It is now up to the cast and crew to decide whether they want to make one.

As such, Sherlock could well take this opportunity to call it a day on its own terms. It is what many of the best TV shows in British history have done, after all. Fawlty Towers and The Office spring to mind as two series that knew to say goodbye after just a handful of episodes, lest they run themselves into the ground.

If Sherlock kept going, perhaps with gaps between the series reaching upwards of four to five years, the appetite for the series might just fade away, leading to an embarrassing decline in interest for the show. That was already hinted at by the lesser ratings this season received in comparison to previous runs. It might be much better, then, to end it while the going is still good after a short but sweet four seasons.
