As the special is set in the 19th century the plot couldn't have been about a sinister media mogul or a dominatrix with some compromising photos on her phone, it had to be a little bit more old-fashioned. Well, going by hints in the trailer, it seems that the special will be tinged with a bit of traditional spookiness.

"We all have a past, Watson. Ghosts," says Holmes, mournfully. "They are the shadows that define our every sunny day."

From this it sounds like a theme of the episode will be 'the past coming back to haunt you' but, more specifically, Sherlock's use of the word "ghosts" suggests that Moffat and Gatiss might use the period setting to turn the detective into a ghost hunter. Sherlock dooby doo!
