Star Trek: 10 Best Romulan Episodes

We have indeed been negligent Captain, but no more. Rest assured, we are back.

Between the bloodthirsty Klingons and the monolithic Borg, the Federation has faced numerous threats to its existence. But none can match the deceptive and cruel nature of The Romulan Star Empire. The Federation's very first war was fought facelessly against the Romulans, with their true nature hidden until a chance encounter decades later with the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk.

Lurking on the other side of the Neutral Zone, honing their singularity-based technology, and their desire for oppression, the vast warbirds of the Romulans will brook no challenge. With customary manipulation, trickery, and down-right deviousness, the sons and daughters of Romulus have been a thorn in the side of human, Vulcan, Klingon, and Dominion.

From first appearing in The Original Series episode The Balance Of Terror, to playing a central role through The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine (not to mention that they were the primary antagonists of the entire first season of Picard) the Romulans have been one of Star Trek's most celebrated villains. There are dozens to choose from, but here are ten of their best outings.

10. Message In A Bottle

While the USS Voyager is stuck in the Delta Quadrant, it still had some contact with the traditional villains of Star Trek. The Romulans were no exception. In the season 4 episode Message In A Bottle, Seven On Nine finds an ancient sensor array which they can utilise to contact the Federation. The crew figure out how to send a signal, so they decide the best thing to do is transmit the entire Doctor over to the Alpha Quadrant.

The Doctor finds himself onboard the brand-new prototype USS Prometheus, a multi-vector assault ship made to combat the Borg and the Dominion. Unfortunately, it gets captured by the dastardly Romulans and it's up to Voyager's Doctor to take the ship back. He's helped in this by the Prometheus Mark II EMH, played hilariously by Andy Dick.

Featuring a great space battle with a pursuing Federation taskforce and the duplicitous Commander Rekar, this episode is regarded as one of the best Voyager episodes. There's also a brief foreshadow of a new villain within this episode, as the owners of the ancient sensor array make themselves known, the dangerous Hirogen.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
