Star Wars Crisis: Cassian Andor Show Delayed Over "Script Issues"

Should we be worried (again)?

In a growing pattern for the Star Wars spin-off projects, a Disney+ series centering on Rogue One co-protagonist Cassian Andor has been delayed due to issues with the current slate of scripts.

The series, which would follow Diego Luna's Rebel operative first seen in Gareth Edwards' 2016 spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars story, was set to begin production in June, but that date has since been removed from the calendar. However, in an interview with ET Online earlier this month, Luna maintained that the series would still be going forward within the year.

Yes, we are doing it. We are doing it this year. It's happening, and I'm getting ready for it.

He went on to elaborate that:

It is a different approach because of the beauty and it's how things happen. It's not just what happens. It's not the typical way of approaching a story. It's about how things happen, which in fact, is the same that happened in Rogue One

Luna is likely referring to the fact that his character, along with most of the leading cast of Rogue One, were killed off at the film's climax. How his character will feature in forthcoming stories, and whether the series will function as a prequel, sequel, or something else entirely remains to be seen.

The program was first announced in September 2018, with Jared Bush (Zootopia, Moana) penning the pilot episode and Stephen Schiff (FX's The Americans, American Assassin) as lead showrunner. News on the series went dormant for some time, until Rogue One co-writer and reshoots director Tony Gilroy was announced as a director.

The as-yet untitled series is one of three currently-announced Star Wars spinoff series in production, along with the The Mandalorian (its second season presently in production) and the Ewan McGregor-led "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series, which was delayed to early 2021 following similar scripting issues. All three series will be released on Disney's proprietery streaming platform Disney+.
