ince the team behind The Clone Wars also work on Rebels, the creators have been able to feed in characters and story elements that bridge the two eras together.

For a time, Rebels did lean too heavily on these references. Characters such as Ahsoka and Rex found their place in the Rebels-verse, but the war was being name dropped into every episode and other characters felt like they were being brought back for nostalgic reasons. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hondo, but he did feel a little shoe-horned in.

The Last Battle revisits The Clone Wars, with Ezra, Kanan and Rex encountering a battalion of run-down Separatist battle droids and forced to play a war game to satisfy the desires of Kalani. While it had its fair share of problems, it’s a wonderful homage to the series with a dedicated episode that fans of both shows were able to enjoy.

It also featured something that I never knew I wanted to see until it happened: Battle Droids vs. Stormtroopers. The Last Battle sees Imperial Stormtroopers and Separatist Battle Droids come face to face, in a small skirmish with Imperial walkers, with Kanan, Ezra and Rex fighting alongside the Battle Droids in order to escape. Last season we got Clones vs. Stormtroopers, now it’s the droids turn.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s a small pleasure, but one that feeds off fan-service and one that sticks out across the season.
