When the Fall first arrived, its success was largely due to the frantic chase by Gibson to put an end to Spector’s increasingly horrific crimes. The plot grew in intensity as they closed in and more and more evidence came to light.

The Fall’s writers were patient, teasing viewers with side-plots, like the corrupt police officer’s suicide or Spector’s grief-stricken clients, that all came together intricately by the end of the second season. But with Spector now seemingly in hospital and then presumably custody, just how are the writers going to prolong a story that many considered to be overworked a long time ago?

The first season’s pace was just right but many viewers felt that the plot twists became too laboured and implausible during the second season. That didn’t stop the show from enjoying the moment we’d long been waiting for – when Spector and DSI Gibson came face to face and now that he has been captured, we should have much more of this to look forward to.

Jamie Dornan has told fans to "expect the unexpected" while the BBC's former controller of drama commissioning promised that the thriller had "one last act to play out". It would be interesting to see the pace pick up now that the chase is seemingly over but it’s more likely that the entirety of the season three opener will be spent waiting to see if Spector pulls through.

Here's hoping that the climax and conclusion will live up to the years of tension-building we have endured.
