The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 5 Ups And 1 Down From 'Postpartum'

Ups...

5. Here We Go Again

Holly ended on a cliffhanger, as a car arrived outside the mansion where, inside, a naked June comforted her newborn baby. Postpartum confirms a time jump in the narrative, and we find June once again back where it all began: the Red Center. The opening scene was confirmation that the handmaid had been brought back to Gilead again, and that she hadn't escaped like she was hoping to.

Had this been any other show, we might have been inclined to roll our eyes at the repetitiveness of the story, but in this case, it's exactly what the narrative requires. The world of Gilead is like a treadmill - it just keeps going round and round, and no matter how many times June thinks she's going to escape, she finds herself right back at the beginning of this never-ending nightmare.

The wonderful writing prevents this show from ever feeling repetitive, anyway.
