When Deadline broke the news of Legion's existence, they acknowledged that Dan Stevens' David is "based on the Marvel comics character Legion, the son of X-Men founder Charles Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy in the films), first introduced in 1985."

Comic Book Resources later asked Hawley whether this link from the comics means Professor X will feature in the show. Hawley kept his cards close to his chest, saying "it would be a spoiler in a true sense to say. I really like the idea of making things that are unexpected and yet feel inevitable. I will say we are true to the origins of this character, and leave it at that."

For now, it's a mystery whether Charles will be mentioned in the show overtly. If they don't want to cross-pollinate too much between the films and the TV series, the writers could keep David's origins ambiguous. But would the fans be satisfied with that?
