The Walking Dead 4.13 – “Alone” Review

rating: 3

With the episode "Alone", fans are moving right along as the main group of survivors still find themselves separated from one another. On last week's episode "Still", we got a good look at the relationship between Beth and Daryl, two survivors that manged to find one another during the chaos at the prison. The two managed to escape with their lives and have been on the road ever since with the assumption that they're possibly the only ones that made it out alive. Last week's episode can best be described as the quest for the booze...moonshine of course, not peach schnapps. And why not? The show takes place in Georgia after all. It was a bit of a step back in terms of action even though it had some of the shows more quality zombie take downs and managed to create a little bit of mystery over what happened inside of a country club. "Alone" kicks off with a musical introduction with little dialogue which turns out to be a flashback involving Bob wondering around by himself in the woods. The montage does a great job at showing Bob's sense of seclusion and loneliness as he appears to be a man at the end of his rope. We're then treated to the first encounter with Daryl and Glenn who happen to stumble across Bob and ask him the three questions to join the group. It's a quick sequence but does a nice job at giving the viewer a quick five minute look into Bob and how he got tied up with the mail group. Events then flash forward to the present where Bob, Maggie, and Sasha are fighting for their lives against a group of walkers in a surrounding fog. The sequence is quick but shows that the three of them are still out there trying to survive. After seeing the quick encounter, the scene switches to last weeks focus characters Beth and Daryl as they experience their own close call with a walker. Much of the episode is split going back and forth between Maggie and her group and Beth and Daryl.
Beth and Daryl then stumble upon a cemetery and a a funeral parlor where they hope to take shelter after Beth hurts herself in a trap. While a few weeks ago fans may not have been wanting to see a lot of interaction between the two, they have quickly become one of the strongest relationships on the show. While out in the wild looking for their own kind of safety, Bob, Maggie, and Sasha stumble across one of the signs for the Terminus sanctuary and decide to follow the tracks to the believed safe haven. As each episode continues to progress, it's obvious that Terminus will be the place that all of the survivors go to eventually reunite. However, the question remains as to what kind of sanctuary Terminus really is and whether or not there's another leader like the Governor there. I have a sneaky suspicion that with three episodes left, it won't be until the season finale that we finally get to see this sanctuary that appears to be the go to location for anyone that's left alive. The pace of the episode did a good job at flashing back and forth between the two groups while one took refuge inside of the protection of a building and the others struggle to survive in the wilderness. The focus continues to be that of the struggle to survive as a result of the attack on the prison. While Bob and company struggle in the wilderness, Daryl and Beth appear to have stumbled across the mother load and found a full stocked and secured building. Things take an interesting turn when Maggie decides to leave Bob and Sasha behind in her continued search for Glenn. While Sasha has given up hope in finding Glenn alive, Maggie cannot believe that he's gone and decides to not risk their lives while she continues on alone. As Bob and Sasha take up Maggie's trail to find her, the two begin talking as Bob gives a little bit more about his background. It's a relief to finally see some thought and dedication into his character because up this point, there was no true character development that had taken place. We knew a little bit about his substance abuse and the fact that he was the sole survivor of two separate groups but it seems that Bob may have some longevity on the show just yet with his evolution in this episode.
As the episode moves along into the second half, we should have known that anything taking place at a cemetery location involving zombies could only end badly. As Beth and Daryl are chowing down on jars of peanut butter and jelly while viewers are trying to figure out if they have a brother/sister bond going or a budding romance, things get crazy when Daryl opens the front door to a horde of zombies. It results in one of the coolest zombie take downs by Daryl in a morgue and culminates in Beth apparent kidnapping in a black car. As Bob and Sasha continue on their search for Maggie, the two are still at odds over wanting to keep going and looking for her or to stop and take shelter at the first spot they can that is defensible and safe. When they come across a large building along the train tracks, Bob lays a kiss on Sasha and tells her that he has to keep going to the Terminus sanctuary. As Sasha starts to get cozy, she looks out the window and notices that Maggie is laying outside around a group of walkers when all hell breaks loose. The two then go Gandalf and Gimili on a group of zombies with a big stick and a street sign, dealing out some of the most unique kills on the episode with a big stick and street sign that looks like a broadaxe. The show ends on a surprise note when we are introduced to Joe and his group of scavengers that had stumbled across Rick in the house a few episodes ago when they find Daryl literately lying in the street from exhaustion. Daryl appears to join up with Joe and his group while Maggie and Sasha catch up with Bob as they continue on to Terminus sanctuary. The last scene of the episode has Glenn come across a sign with with Terminus location marked on. We can only assume that with three episodes left, the season will culminate in everyone meeting up at this specific spot. It's a date with destiny that we'll see in the weeks wrapping up season four. Is Terminus really a "sanctuary"? Who was in the black car that took Beth? Are Joe and his group from Terminus?
