What To Expect From SHERLOCK Season 2!

With the encore screenings of season 1 of Sherlock finishing their run on BBC 1 this Wednesday night with the season finale ‘The Great Game’, I thought it would be an appropriate time to do a quick run through of what we can expect from the forthcoming second season.

Spoiler Warning for those who have not seen season 1 of Sherlock With the encore screenings of season 1 of Sherlock finishing their run on BBC 1 this Wednesday night with the season finale €˜The Great Game€™, I thought it would be an appropriate time to do a quick run through of what we can expect from the forthcoming second season. It has already been confirmed earlier in the year that we will once again be getting a season comprised of three 90 minute episodes, all of which will be based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle€™s three most famous Holmes stories. The first episode of season 2, A Scandal in Belgravia, is based upon the novel A Scandal in Bohemia. This was the story that introduced our detective to the wily Irene Adler - the only woman to outsmart Sherlock. In the original story Holmes is hired by the King of Bohemia to retrieve a compromising photo of the monarch and his previous mistress- Irene Adler. Adler proves to be a clever match for Holmes and manages to always remain one step ahead of him at all times. In later film and television adaptations of the story the character of Adler was used as a romantic interest. The recent Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey movie Sherlock Holmes cast Rachel McAdams as Adler and used her as an ex-lover of Holmes. If the writers for Sherlock decide to play up the romantic element of Adler and Holmes it will be interesting to see how Holmes reacts, considering how miserable and antisocial he can be. Although they have been filming season 2 of Sherlock for the past few months now, there has been no official announcement of who will be stepping into the characters shoes. It is interesting to note that in the season 1 finale €˜The Great Game€™ while on the trail of Moriarty, Holmes found a note that he deduced was from written on thick paper only found in Bohemia and that the handwriting was distinctly that of a woman. Are we to take from this that Adler is working for Moriarty? If so it€™s quiet a deviation from the books, although the recent Guy Ritchie movie introduced the idea of Adler working as a spy for the villain. The fact that Belgravia is in the title may suggest that the story will centre around a figure of importance in the Westminster area of London rather than the King of Bohemia. A politician perhaps? The second episode, although based on The Hound of the Baskervilles, will come with a slight twist and be named The Hounds of Baskerville. As the title implies, Holmes and Watson may encounter more than one beast on the moors. Hounds of the Baskerville is of course the most famous Holmes story of all. In the original novel Holmes and Watson are sent to Devon to protect Sir Henry Baskerville from a beast who prowls the countryside. As it stands British actor Russell Tovey has been cast as Sir Henry. Written by series co-creator Mark Gatiss (who also plays Holmes' brother Mycroft in the show), a horror fanatic and the writer of the fantastic season 1 finale, this promises to be the best of the lot. Gatiss knows the in€™s and out€™s of the horror genre and this story is the perfect opportunity to put his love merge his love for Holmes and the genre. I€™m personally looking forward to this episode the most. The final episode of the season -The Reichenbach Fall, is based on The Final Problem. The original tale, which is set at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, is famous for being the story where Holmes faces death at the hands of Moriarty. Tired of writing for the character Conan-Doyle had him killed off in a battle with Moriarty where they throw each other off a cliff and into a vicious waterfall. Needless to say the character proved so popular that Doyle had to bring him back. That being said though, Final Problem is a very important story in the Holmes canon. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out along with how and where the show will stage the battle. It€™s a safe bet that the writers won€™t kill off Sherlock, we€™ll probably be left with an ambiguous ending as to whether or not Holmes survives his showdown. It makes you wonder though if the writers will finish Moriarty€™s story with this episode. Either way it€™s sure be gripping stuff. Sherlock season 2 is set for release in the UK this autumn on the BBC, no exact date has been given yet.

Tom Ryan hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
