Young Justice: Outsiders - 4 Ups & 2 Downs From Episodes 7-9

Ups...

4. Shedding Some Light

Young Justice Vandal Savage
Warner Bros.

The Light has been the show's Big Bad since the beginning. Comprised of villains like Vandal Savage, Ra's Al Ghul, Lex Luthor, Sportsmaster and Black Manta, the faction has continually stirred up trouble for the younger troupe of heroes, all while manipulating the Justice League. Though we still didn't really know that much about them, that all changed in the first of this week's episodes.

'Evolution' was a rather insightful tale that spotlighted Savage in a way we had never seen before. Taking us back to prehistoric times, it allowed us to see how he evolved over time and ultimately became the first metahuman. We also discovered that, after defeating an army of aliens, he and his daughter would be named "The Light".

With a mission to eliminate the weaknesses of humanity so that they can evolve into the most supreme beings in the galaxy, Savage's vision for The Light is now clearer than ever, as is the fact that metahumans can help him realise that vision. Knowing this information makes it a lot easier to engage with the organisation and, more importantly, Savage, who proved to be a surprisingly compelling protagonist here. In fact, it was hard not to feel a little sympathy for him when he had to kill his ailing daughter, Olympia.

On the Savage note, it was also incredibly tasteful of the showrunners to dedicate the first ever Savage-centric episode to the late great Miguel Ferrer, who voiced the character during the show's original two seasons.
