GSP Returning To UFC & Eyeing Fight With Bisping Or McGregor
The former welterweight champ is looking to test the waters in other divisions.
It's official. Georges St Pierre - indisputably the greatest welterweight and arguably top pound-for-pound fighter to ever compete in MMA - has signed a new contract to once again go to war inside the octagon.
GSP last fought over three years ago at UFC 167 defeating Johny Hendricks, then relinquishing his title and walking away from the sport claiming he needed a break from the immense pressure that came with being champion.
Now the hunger is back and one of the GOATs is ready to step back into the cage, reaching an agreement with the UFC after months of negotiations. Despite a career at welterweight, there's reports - now confirmed by both Michael Bipsing and St. Pierre's trainer - that he's looking for the middleweight championship.
GSP's coach Firas Zahabi says he wants Georges to make his return in an "epic fight", rather than compete for the welterweight title he vacated.
"My ideal scenario, I don’t know if it’s still up for grabs, but I was really happy when there was a buzzing of Bisping or McGregor. I thought those two would be two epic fights. One, he would go a little lower [in weight]; one, he would go a little higher. But those are really, really intriguing fights. I think the welterweight title is not really something he is thinking about right now because of the current landscape, but there is always the 185-pound belt. And of course, McGregor is such a mega-star that if you put those two on a main event, I don’t think that anybody in the world wouldn’t watch that."
He's correct that a Conor McGregor/GSP fight is the biggest matchup UFC could put together, but that's sacrificing long term success for a one time payday.
