Sometimes a great partnership is born out of a great rivalry!

While the doubles division in professional wrestling can often help alleviate the pressure of having a large roster, it has also been responsible for launching the careers of numerous superstars such as Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart, Shawn Michaels, Booker T and Edge, who after getting over as part of a successful tag team, were able to carry their popularity into a singles run and go on to become World Champions.

However, sometimes the opposite can happen. If by some twist of fate a couple of popular ex-main eventers find themselves without an interesting storyline, rather than put them in a mid-card angle that sees them go one on one, the decision is often made to pair the two up and form a super tag team.

While this hasn’t always been a complete success (ahem, Hogan and Edge) there are plenty of examples of when two big-name players have stood in the middle of the ring and clasped hands in a Carl Weathers and Arnold Schwarzenegger style handshake, forming a team that was so epic, it brought the words ‘this is awesome’ from the lips of wrestling fans around the world - long before that annoying chant became a thing.

Although he made his name in WWE as a tag team wrestler, by the time October 2006 rolled around, Edge had established himself as one of the best singles stars in the business and a two-time WWE Champion, while Randy Orton – fresh off a feud with Rey Mysterio – had become the youngest Heavyweight Champion ever.

In an attempt to gain revenge on DX – who cost him the opportunity to win the WWE Championship for the third time – The Rated R Superstar approached Randy Orton and attempted to convince him to team up and rid the WWE of DX once and for all. Orton accepted the offer, forming the team known as Rated-RKO – along with Lita, who acted as their valet.

The two former world champions spent the majority of their run embroiled in a feud with DX and went on to win the Tag Team Championship once before their own personal ambitions to compete for the WWE Championship caused the team to disband.
