10 Best Stretcher Matches In WWE History

10. Bob Backlund vs. Billy Graham (November 16, 1978)

Only an elite few wrestlers can say they've held the WWE Championship for over a year, and Bob Backlund is one of them. In fact, he's one of the longest reigning WWE champions of all-time. His first run with the title lasted a whopping 2,1345 days, which is equivalent to nearly six years. Bruno Sammartino is the only other man in history to have held it longer with eight years. Billy Graham ended the four year title reign of Sammartino on April 30, 1977, but lost the belt less than a year later to rising upstart Bob Backlund on February 20, 1978. Backlund was a prototype in being the cookie-cutter babyface that fans came to love. Logically, Graham wanted his belt back, so he feuded with Backlund over the strap for the remainder of 1978. They first met in a Sicilian Stretcher match on September 16 (which you will see a little later on in this list), but its controversial finish set up the need for a rematch exactly two months later in November. Although Backlund was able to decisively defeat Superstar in their second Stretcher match encounter, they'd still meet many more times in singles competition over the next five years.
