8. Sting - Starrcade 1992

BattleBowl! If you guys don't know your WCW gimmick matches, BattleBowl was a one-night tournament where the whole field got split into tag teams and bracketed up, with the winning teams advancing to a battle royal to close the show.

In 1992, Sting wound up teaming with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams against Jushin Liger and Erik Watts, which is the early '90s equivalent of John Cena and Brock Lesnar taking on Kalisto and a tiny baby deer with no fear of humans. Sting and Doc wound up murdering Watts while Liger looked on helplessly, but they got very lucky.

Not just lucky because an easy win there kept them fresh for the finals, but also because Sting had to wrestle Big Van fargin’ Vader later on in the show in the finals of the King of Cable tournament. I wouldn't have went into a match against Vader without a buffalo rifle, much less without knowing if I was going to have to wrestle, like, Ron Simmons first.

Sting persevered, though, and had an absolutely hellacious match with his archenemy. My favourite part is when 250 pound Sting, apparently inspired by wrestling Liger, starts throwing koppo kicks and ganmengiris at Vader. The Mastodon, of course, just punched Sting repeatedly in the head and crushed his ribs using athletic fatness.

Sting ultimately ekes out a win by planting Vader with a scary-looking powerslam when the big man tries to fly.

If you were wondering, neither man wound up winning BattleBowl, mostly because they almost killed each other in their contest.
