This was the night that the WWF won the Monday Night Wars.

On 4 January 1999, WCW Monday Nitro was running live against a pretaped episode of WWF Raw is War. During Nitro, commentator Tony Schiavone infamously spoiled the main event of Raw, sardonically stating that Mankind's first-ever WWF Championship win over The Rock would "put butts in the seats".

It was in that moment that hundreds of thousands of fans switched the channel from Nitro to Raw, eager to watch the everyman babyface finally win the big one.

The Worcester, Massachusetts crowd was absolutely feverish throughout the No Disqualification main event, and the pop they produced when Mankind finally won the match (with assistance from DX and Stone Cold Steve Austin) was among the loudest sustained pops in the history of professional wrestling. This segment also produced one of Michael Cole's best ever lines, as he remarked that "Mankind has achieved his dream, and the dream of everyone else who's been told 'you can't do it!'"

Two days short of four weeks later, Mankind would lose the belt back to The Rock at the Royal Rumble in a gruesome I Quit match, but WWF would never lose in the ratings again.
