10 Craziest Bumps In WWE History

These spots are the reason for those 'Don't Try This At Home' vignettes we've all seen.

We all appreciate great storylines, gripping in-ring action, and charismatic characters - but these are the classic components of wrestling, features we expect to be constantly present. Occasionally these ingredients aren't enough. Wrestling fans need something altogether more immediate, more visceral, to satisfy their need for entertainment. Sometimes all a match needs to set the crowd alight is a ridiculous, horrible bump. Here we've chronicled the ten craziest bumps in the history of the WWE. They've been chosen for a variety of reasons - some for their unique nature, others for their sheer sense of destruction - but all are guaranteed to set the pulse racing. These spots are the reason for those 'Don't Try This At Home' vignettes we've all seen, and for good reason.

10. Bret Hart Starts It All - Survivor Series 1995

Where better to start than at the beginning? Bret Hart's tumble from the apron to the Spanish announce table may not seem the most spectacular of bumps these days, but in 1995 nobody had seen anything like it in the WWE. The New Generation period is often seen as something of an awkward transition between the Golden Age of the 80s and the chaotic Attitude Era; never did that gap seem more easily traversed than in this match. Bret and Diesel worked a hard-hitting no disqualification bout up until this moment, but everything preceding it was standard fare. They removed a turnbuckle pad and rammed one another's heads into it. They biffed each other with chairshots. It was entertaining enough but hardly groundbreaking. That is, until Diesel hit a standard-looking shoulder tackle on Bret...and knocked him from the apron through the Spanish announce table!
Bret's fall wasn't just effective because of its visual impact (remember, nobody had ever seen an announce table break at a WWE event) but because of the aftermath. Diesel sold the realisation of what he'd just done to perfection, actually making it seem as though he was concerned for his hated rival. He almost seems to hurry through the rest of the bout, rushing to put Hart away and allow him to receive medical attention. Watching the event live it must have seemed like some terrible accident. Bret was able to take advantage of Diesel's carelessness and roll him up to win the WWF Championship, but the match's legacy has been outlived by that of its signature bump. How many modern-day Spanish announce tables survive an entire Pay-Per-View unscathed? In fairness to this bump, it's fairly crazy in its own right as well. Bret has a much smaller area to land safely in compared to the mammoth announce tables modern-day wrestlers have the luxury of. You may also notice that they didn't even bother to remove the chunky TV monitors, severely increasing the chance of a grisly landing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7VGYonDdP8
