There was guaranteed to be new champions come Royal Rumble Sunday anyhow. Shawn Michaels and Diesel vacated the belts after Survivor Series 1994, and a tournament was instituted to determine new champions. The finals were set for the Rumble.

The victory for 123 Kid and Bob Holly marked the first time that the belts changed hands at the event. It was only the third time in Rumble history that the belts were even at stake.

The first such time was in 1992, when The Legion of Doom defended against The Natural Disasters, losing by count-out. In 1994, The Quebecers defeated Bret and Owen Hart via referee stoppage. So not only was Kid and Holly's victory the first Royal Rumble men's Tag Team title change, it was the first time any men's Tag Team title match at the event ended via pinfall.
