It probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that a survivor of deathmatches, chair shots, and sickening splats onto concrete would be in considerable agony at times. By early-1997, Foley's back was causing him a great deal of unrelenting pain. An MRI revealed one herniated disc and noticeable degeneration in the majority of his discs. He was faced with the probability of needing an epidural.

Foley was looking at two weeks off (due to a cancelled international tour) after the pay-per-view and subsequent TV tapings. For those two weeks, beginning with the days before 'Mania, Foley underwent a perpetual self-treatment of applying ice, resting, and periodically stretching his back, doing little more than precisely that (aside from wrestling that weekend).

To Foley's surprise, the basic treatment worked wonders for his body, and he was luckily able to avoid the needle entirely.
