Punk truly found his calling in the latter half of 2009, espousing straight-edge values in such a holier-than-thou fashion that he eventually went full zealot, becoming the David Koresh of teetotalers. His feud with Mysterio was unusual in that Mysterio had to take a contra stance to somebody advocating clean living. Though one could suppose that Punk's overbearing advocacy was enough to make him a villain.

The original idea for the story was to showcase Punk in an even more sinister light. Perhaps cribbed from The Sandman's 1996 feud with Raven in ECW, Punk was intended to become friendlier with Rey's children Alliyah and Dominic, eerily taking on fatherly qualities as he slowly turned them against their dad. WWE ended up nixing the edgy idea, believing it was too over the line for their family-oriented direction.
