The storyline between Sting and Triple H leading in to WrestleMania 31 was a jumbled mess. First Sting was there to end The Authority's corruption and willful ineptitude, as he had seen what short-sightedness had done to other companies (he meant WCW, not TNA). Then Sting was suddenly a crusader on WCW's behalf, while evil Triple H represented the wonderful and magical WWE that brings people of all walks together.

Whatever the story was supposed to be, the clash degenerated into a smoke-and-mirrors brawl involving nWo and DX members, all of whom were present at the match rehearsal. There, when Helmsley laid out the finish and announced he would be winning, Scott Hall claims he turned and looked at Hogan, and both of them were flabbergasted. Hall was mostly surprised that Sting agreed to come in without an assured victory, in his own way reflecting how many fans felt about the match.
