10. Joey Mercurys Broken Face
Joey Mercury had been thrust into the tag team scene within WWE as a member of MNM. Together with his tag partner, Johnny Nitro, and their valet, Melina, the threesome quickly rose to the top of the tag team ranks on the Smackdown brand. However, after only a year together, Mercury would be betrayed by his running mates, as they attacked him and kicked him to the curb. In reality, Mercury had been an admitted drug addict since the age of 15, and WWE was sending him to rehab. After a six month sabbatical, Joey Mercury returned to WWE television. He quickly reformed MNM and the group began feuding with the Hardy Boyz. This rivalry eventually led to a four-way tag team ladder match at Armageddon in 2006. It was during this contest that Joey Mercury would suffer one of the most gruesome-looking injuries in wrestling history. The spot saw Matt Hardy hold both Mercury and Nitro over a ladder. Matts brother Jeff then dove off the top rope, slingshotting the ladder into both mens faces. Nitro put his hands up, but for whatever reason, Joey didnt. The ladder immediately shattered his face -- breaking his nose in three different places and fracturing his orbital bone. Mercury rolled to the outside, and was in a matter of moments covered in blood. The red, viscous fluid poured from his face, staining his skin, pants, and the protective mats on the floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN81rkaVhU4 Mercury immediately left the match and was taken to a nearby hospital where he would receive a total of thirty stitches to close his wounds. Surprisingly, he would return to competitive action just a few weeks later. However, Joey was released from his contract shortly thereafter as he had developed an addiction to the painkillers prescribed to him for his injuries. Joey Mercury subsequently cleaned his life up, crediting his release from the company and an intervention from Vince McMahon with helping him do so. Today, he has rejoined the WWE as Joey Matthews. He now works as a road agent and occasionally helps trains the stars of tomorrow at the Performance Center.
