There’s no way around it; professional wrestling is a seedy business with an often disturbing past.

There are a tonne of different reasons why this is the case. Unlike major sports leagues, there’s no union to take care of the wrestlers when they’re out of the business. There have been countless shady promoters who often haven't paid talent what they’ve been promised. There’s the gruelling travel schedules that keep wrestlers away from their families, leaving them to indulge in drugs and alcohol to cope with the physical and emotional pain while out of the spotlight.

It's a tough business to find work, and an even tougher one to stay in.

Also, unlike real competitions, wrestling is often overlooked by the media. Until recently, it was largely treated as a weird spectacle whenever it was reported on, only worthy of an occasional puff piece now. Very few journalists delved into the inner-workings of the business, meaning a lot of bad things committed by a lot of bad people were allowed to go unchecked.

There have been horrifying sex crimes, massive drug problems and even a few murders that have been kept quiet or covered up in the business. Here we take a look at 10 of those scandals that rocked the wrestling world.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
