As the saying goes, “history is written by the victors”, and as we know WWE effectively won the wrestling war in 2001. Now we see professional wrestling’s past through the narrow and rather quirky filter of Vince McMahon. It’s a view that is often far from reality.

Sometimes his history revisions are harmless, and more silly than anything (for example, Andre the Giant had been bodyslammed MANY times before Hulk Hogan did it at WrestleMania 3 , hell Hulk did it himself a few times before then). Sometimes these retroactive changes are due to saving money (old theme songs being replaced on their network with generic versions).

But it's most troubling when their revisions are done to make the company look like it was built by a bunch of philanthropic geniuses, and every other promoter was just a fool.

One thing we’ve learned over the decades is that Vince doesn’t like to share credit. The contributions and innovations of other promotions have been glossed over, and we are subjected to not only his pet peeves (“WWE Universe” instead of “fans”, “title” instead of “belt”), but also to who can and cannot be talked about. He also has a tendency to just flat-out erase some things from existence.

Sadly, there’s not much that we can do, except shake our collective heads at how bizarre it all is, and hope the real story gets out.

Here are the 10 most alarming ways WWE rewrites history.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
