So long a staple of professional wrestling TV shows, the squash match had largely disappeared in recent years thanks to the top-to-bottom nature of the roster and alternative methods of storytelling introduced with the advent of the Monday Night Wars in the mid-'90s.

The 2016 brand split brought the squash back not quite with a bang, but a very appropriate THUD! Shortened rosters suddenly made local talent a necessity for putting over the latest crop of monster heels - the Braun Strowmans and Nia Jaxes of this world.

One person we didn't expect to see join the job squad was Brock Lesnar. Two years after dishing out his own Big Four main event destruction at SummerSlam 2014, Brock found himself on the receiving end of one at Survivor Series 2016. Goldberg speared The Beast Incarnate, speared him again, and from there it was all over except the shouting.

The world of wrestling's mouth fell agape in the wake of the shocking destruction, but it wasn't the first time a one-way obliteration had stopped the press. The history of WWE is littered with great and ghastly demolition jobs after all.

Here are the 10 most famous squash matches in the history of WWE. These are contests that were over before we knew it - and in many cases, before the loser did either.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
