10 Most Harmful Trends In Wrestling Today

Time to stop lying to yourself.

The sad truth is that most of you reading this article will vehemently disagree with it. Still, this list has been written for the 5% of wrestling fans with memories that go back further than the last five years or so. Don€™t misunderstand, you ARE supposed to enjoy it, but it€™s an overly €˜ranty€™ article and ranty, opinionated pieces don€™t usually get over too well with today€™s fans. €˜If that€™s the case, why bother writing it?€™ you may ask. Well, that€™s a good question... The short answer is this; because what is being said here flat out needs to be said and, as a fans and supporters of professional wrestling, we need to be the ones saying it. Over the last few years, a number of trends have arisen in the sport of pro wrestling that are completely harmful, both to wrestlers and to the industry in general. For a business built on the back of the suspension of disbelief, emotionally charged, dramatic performance art and contemporary myth making, wrestling is in danger of becoming a farcical re-enactment of itself and losing its core audience in the process... As previously stated, the vast majority of you will read this and passionately rush to heap scorn upon it. The €˜comments€™ section below is likely to be utterly wince inducing, but that can€™t be helped really. In the words of Malcolm X €œif you have no critics, you€™ll likely have no success€. This feature has been written for that small percentile of fans that will read this and understand what it is all about. Wrestling is the most fan friendly sport ever devised. Ergo, we have the power to change things and these are the things we should focus on first. These are the 10 most harmful trends in pro wrestling today...

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
