10 Most INFURIATING WWE Quirks

9. Championship Opportunity

Vince McMahon's hatred of pro wrestling manifests as an irrational refusal to script in the accepted and known language of wrestling. Everything we know requires some sort of synonym, to at once remind us of and disassociate us from the concept. It's a weird and pointless endeavour that undermines itself. A known control freak, Vince must own or at least modify absolutely everything. He gets worse the older he gets, too. Soon, WWE will refer to rings as enclosures and rivalries as conflicts. Feud is already off the four-legged dining structure.

The worst of which is the recent development of referring to "title shots" as "championship opportunities". There's no way anybody infers "shot" in this context as anything violent - further reminder that Vince McMahon is a pro wrestling promotor - so he has simply grabbed the nearest thesaurus and selected two alternative synonyms that don't sound remotely connected to wrasslin'.

"Championship opportunity" sounds almost hysterically contrived - a fitting byproduct of an hysterically contrived product, in which anything organic cannot happen.

Like a sneeze.
