10 Most Pointless WWE Returns

... aaaand he's gone.

Vader Goldust Return
WWE

There's nothing quite like the return of a much-loved wrestling star to bring the crowd to their feet and drum up some nostalgic interest in the WWE product.

In the last 12 months alone, we've seen the likes of Goldberg, Kurt Angle and the Hardy Boyz come back from hiatus, all of them going on to play meaningful roles in the Monday Night Raw storylines over the weeks and, in some cases, months ahead.

Not all returns are so successful, though. Some of them, in fact, fall totally flat, ultimately undermined by poor booking which sees them slip into insignificance (or, perhaps, simply the fact that no-one really remembers them much from their first run).

We've already seen this happen in 2017, with The Great Khali's turn at Battleground. The Punjabi Nightmare became a focal point of SmackDown's leading angle for all of about five minutes before the company decided it wasn't so keen on bringing him back after all.

Apart from the poor superstars themselves, you really have to feel sorry for the guy who has to explain the wasted appearance money to Vince McMahon, who isn't exactly noted for his ability to forgive.

10. Kenny Dykstra

Kenny Dykstra, at one point the youngest member of the WWE main roster, was brought back to the WWE ring last year by The Miz in the run-up to his Intercontinental Championship match with Dolph Ziggler at No Mercy.

The connection here was fairly clear, to be fair: Ziggler and Dykstra were formerly teammates in the short-lived Spirit Squad. And this was something Miz took great pleasure in reminding his opponent of, presumably under the mistaken belief that he would be left too humiliated to compete at the pay-per-view.

It was a nice if very brief trip down memory lane, but after the dust settled on the Ziggler thing - with his ex-friend ultimately winning the title at No Mercy - the company suddenly realised it had nothing else for the one-time Tag Team Champion to do.

This was a spot with which Dykstra was by now pretty familiar, and after teaming for a short while with fellow Spirit Squad alumnus Mikey, the duo were together released early the following year. Just why?
