Another star who McIntyre has unfinished business with is John Cena. The pair exchanged words when Cena returned to WWE television before the Royal Rumble and were part of a fatal four-way match to determine Brock Lesnar’s victim at the pay-per-view. The McIntyre-Strowman angle is in danger of growing tired and this is almost completely fresh.

Cena has only made a handful of WWE appearances since last year’s WrestleMania but will play a more prominent role in the build-up to ‘The Show of Shows’. In many ways, Cena appears the most natural opponent for ‘The New’ Daniel Bryan, but a record-breaking 17th world title coronation would overshadow the likely babyface triumphs of Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins, so WWE is wisely lining up their biggest draw for a different role.

Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer reported that the initial plan for Cena was to square him off against Lars Sullivan, but that match is now off the table with ‘The Freak’ absent from WWE television. McIntyre is the ready-made replacement for Cena to put over.

‘The Chosen One’ has touted himself as a legend killer of sorts in recent months, destroying The Shield, Kurt Angle and Dolph Ziggler, and taking out Cena would add some serious legitimacy to that gimmick. There is no bigger rub in WWE today than beating Cena clean.
