10 Reasons The 1990 Royal Rumble Is The Best Of All Time

10. The Commentary Team

It may not sound like a great tandem on paper, but how good were Tony Schiavone and Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura in this match? Ventura’s preposterous attire may well have been enough for them to get a thumbs up, but the two are absolutely fantastic throughout. If you are a budding commentator looking for an example of great work that lifts a match, go back and watch this.

From the moment Ted DiBiase enters, all the way to Hulk Hogan's celebrations, Ventura and Schiavone do everything within their power to tell the myriad of stories that are going on in this match. Logic is provided for the decisions of the heels, the big guys are treated with the reverence they needed, and moments were accentuated, rather than embellished.

In the annals of all-time great commentary performances, Schiavone and Ventura’s 1990 Rumble showing is criminally overlooked. Not only do both men put in great showings, they also manage to compliment each other fantastically. Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon had great chemistry, but more often than not Heenan was doing the grunt work, carrying Gorilla to something passable.

Schiavone and Ventura’s voices worked supremely well together, and it is a crying shame that they didn’t work together for longer.
