10 Reasons WWE Might Bring Back The World Heavyweight Championship

The 'Big Gold Belt' could help alleviate WWE's main event woes.

A constant struggle for WWE is presenting engaging main events. That's partly due to a lack of depth in headline performers, but it's mostly down to lacklustre creative ideas. A recent example was Battleground 2014, where John Cena retained his WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a mish-mash fatal four way against Kane, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns. The co-main event of that night was an uninspiring 19 man battle royal for the vacant Intercontinental Championship. As a result of this flat main event booking, Battleground ended up being instantly forgettable. It's fairly typical of WWE's woeful presentation right now. They lack meaningfulness in so many areas, which ultimately makes their matches less interesting. This feature will argue that a return of the World Heavyweight Championship will help address some of these shortfalls. WWE could really benefit from the use of the belt as a 'prop' right now, a device to give a main event at least some semblance of meaning. As Cena's defence proved back at Battleground, just one 'World' belt really isn't managing to pull the WWE cart right now. The problem has only exacerbated since Brock Lesnar won the WWE belt. The Beast only works part time dates, so we're left with a situation without any title prop right now. There is the Intercontinental title, but has that really filled the secondary main title spot that the WHC once filled? Not in the slightest. Despite all the problems last year with the 'Big Gold Belt' perception, it still fulfilled a purpose up until its unification with the WWE Title in December 2013. Here's the ten reasons why WWE might be thinking about going back to a system of two world titles.
