9. Asylum Match - Dean Ambrose

Here's hoping this is the last Asylum Match for a long, long time. WWE booked their first ever match of this type at Extreme Rules this year, as Dean Ambrose took on Chris Jericho in a match that lasted 26 minutes but felt like 26 years.

It was a steel cage match with weapons hanging from the enclosure, and was presented as the brainchild of Ambrose. This was when Ambrose was still presenting his 'Ambrose Asylum' talk-show segment, and the feud also saw the end of Mitch the plant. The only way to win the bout was by pinfall or submission, which was probably the only thing this structure had going for it.

WCW actually put on three Asylum Matches that were tailor-made for Scott Steiner. The difference here was that the bout took place in a small circular cage inside the ring, and victory was only possible via submission. Needless to say, the matches were terrible.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
