According to the company's record books, Bob Backlund's first reign as WWE Champion is the second longest in history. His 2,135 days on top from February 20, 1978 to December 26, 1983 are bettered only by Bruno Sammartino's longest reign (2,803 days), marking him as the pre-Hulkamania/post-Bruno era's most successful wrestler.

This version of history isn't entirely accurate. While Backlund did hold the belt for most of that time, he actually lost it to NJPW founder Antonio Inoki in November 1979. Winning the gold in Tokushima, Japan, Inoki held it until December 6th, when Backlund defeated him in a rematch. The result was overturned following interference from Tiger Jeet Singh, Antonio refused to take it back, and Backlund was re-awarded the gold after defeated Bobby Duncum six days later.

Bob's first reign would've lasted just 648 days if WWE recognised this title switch, and he'd have a second at 1,470. This would make his lengthiest run the third longest in company history behind Bruno and Hulk Hogan. That's still an impressive accomplishment, and the Inoki situation does little to tarnish Backlund's legacy, but it's still an interesting retcon.
