There aren’t many guarantees in professional wrestling, but the quality of NXT’s TakeOver series is fast becoming one. It has been an extremely long time since the yellow and black brand failed to deliver at a special event (if ever), and TakeOver: Philadelphia was another fantastic addition to the ever-growing canon.

From top to bottom, the show did not disappoint. NXT continued to show that predictability in wrestling is not as bad a thing as some believe, and that the journey is far more important than the destination. No titles changed hands and all five matches ended with clean finishes - this was pro wrestling at its simplest and best.

This article could almost be reduced to just one word. William Regal’s show ticked all of the necessary boxes in the Wells Fargo Center, setting up future stories, introducing new stars and booking fantastic wrestling matches. What did NXT get right in Philadelphia? Well, everything, but these things in particular.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
