10 Things That Didn't Go The Way WWE Wanted
8. Mabel's Main Event Push
During his infamous steroid trial in the mid-'90s, Vince McMahon remained dead-set on pushing monstrous men. Obviously, he couldn't push a muscle-bound colossus, so he had to settle for a more "natural-looking" monster.
His choice? Mabel.
You know, Mabel? One half of Men on a Mission, that fun-loving tag team who danced around and talked about rising up from tough situations? Yeah, not exactly a believable main-eventer, but nonetheless he made it to the top of the card.
After winning the 1995 King of the Ring, Mabel was awarded a match with then-WWF Champion Diesel for the gold at that year's SummerSlam. He lost in a sub-10-minute stinker, and his spot as the company's top heel was quickly handed over to Davey Boy Smith.
There were a few reasons for Mabel's sudden descent from superstardom. The first was that his size hampered his mobility. This issue hadn't hindered folks like Yokozuna in the past, but what made it problematic for Mabel was his recklessness in the ring. After injuring high-profile talents such as Diesel and The Undertaker, he was released from his contract in 1996.
If you're going to be 500+ pounds and wrestle, great - just do it safely.
