10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Shane McMahon

7. He Was A Referee Named Shane Stevens

Vince McMahon really must have wanted his son to learn the business from top to bottom because he made Shane work as a referee. Not only that, but they gave him the name of "Shane Stevens" as well. That's because Vince was a regular announcer on television, so they likely didn't want fans knowing it was Vince's son. For a lot of us watching WWE in those days, we didn't know Vince was the owner. It would have been confusing if they gave him the McMahon last name as a referee. One of the most famous instances where Shane was noticeable as a referee was at WrestleMania VIII when Randy Savage beat Ric Flair for the WWE Title. When Elizabeth went down to ringside, a number of officials showed up to try to stop her. One of the more noticeable guys there was a 22-year-old Shane McMahon. Shane did the referee work for a couple of years, then finished school at Boston University in 1993 and was given a role behind the scenes in WWE's marketing department. It was another five years until he was a regular on television again.
