2017 is less than three weeks old, but so much has happened in the professional wrestling world already. NJPW surpassed sky-high expectations with Wrestle Kingdom 11, the WWE UK Championship tournament was a great success, and British fans have already been treated to great shows from Progress and our very own WCPW, among others. If this standard keeps up for the next 11 months, us wrestling fans are going to be a spoiled bunch.

There have been standout performances-a-plenty already, but one name sticks out like a sore thumb: Kenny Omega. 'The Cleaner' put in one of the all-time great professional wrestling performances in the main event of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11, coming up short against Kazuchika Okada in a match that wrestling journalism overlord Dave Meltzer gave six stars. Sure, it takes two to tango, but every dance has a leader.

Those who have followed Omega's career weren't surprised by this performance in the slightest. The former IWGP Intercontinental Champion has threatened greatness for a number of years, and when given the biggest stage of his career to perform on, the man from Winnipeg did not disappoint. Omega is taking a step back from New Japan post-Wrestle Kingdom, but there will be plenty more to come from him in 2017.

Ahead of his inevitable return in the spring, it is time to educate yourself about Kenny Omega, 2017's most important wrestler.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
